Years ago, I had a patient come to me as a new patient with back pain and buttock pain. Important to the story, she had undergone a total hip replacement at a very prestigious university from a very respected surgeon a few months before seeing me.

It was obvious from the first moment I saw her walk what was wrong. The leg that had the hip replacement was a good 2-3 inches shorter than the other. I had never seen anything that looked like that. I asked her point blank what went wrong with the surgery and why was she so imbalanced. After all, clearly an imbalance like that could easily lead to back pain, hip pain and all sorts of other musculoskeletal problems.

The surgeon had told her that she was mistaken and her leg length was really the same and that it was just the muscles that were imbalanced and she just needed to get used to it. That was a shocking story. I asked if the surgeon had measured the legs, which is easy to do with a tape measure. She said he had not.

There is a quote I like and I'm not sure where it comes from but I heard it in a song, and it goes, "Don't outsmart your common sense." Here is the point -- if you're being told something that just doesn't fit with your own experience of your own body, make sure you vocalize that to your doctor. If it seems your doctor isn't hearing what you're saying and/or won't take the time to listen, trust yourself and your instincts and don't be afraid to get a second opinion.
