Protesters in Raleigh, North Carolina cheered as they toppled two bronze statues off a Confederate monument outside the state Capitol late on Friday (June 19) night before hanging one, the statue of a cavalryman, by its neck from a streetlight.

According to local media, the demonstrators then dragged the other statue, a Confederate artilleryman, through the streets to the Wake County courthouse where police later removed the statue.

Protests against racial injustice sparked by the death of George Floyd have spread across the United States and parts of Europe. Floyd, 46, died after a police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes while he was held face down in a street in Minneapolis on May 25.

Some of the civil action has focused on monuments glorifying countries' imperialist past, which some people see as offensive in today's multi-ethnic society. Protesters have torn down statues linked to empire and the slave trade.

The southern Confederacy seceded from the United States, in large part to defend the practice of slavery, prompting the bloody 1861-65 U.S. Civil War.
