"Tower Lord" by Anthony Ryan, the second book in a trilogy, shifted focus away from the main character she loved, resulting in a slow and uninteresting plot. "The Fall of Babel" by Josiah Bancroft, the final book in a series, sidelined the main character's quest in favor of other characters, disrupting the narrative flow. "The Republic of Thieves" by Scott Lynch, the third book in a series, focused too much on a subplot involving the main character's abusive ex-girlfriend, detracting from the enjoyable heist elements of the series. "The Heroes" by Joe Abercrombie, a standalone novel, failed to engage her with its singular focus on military strategy. Finally, "The Book of M" by Peng Shephard, while exploring interesting themes, fell flat due to absurd fantasy elements and a disappointing resolution that deviated from the main character's emotional journey.
