The traditional Blackfoot tipi is built around four foundational poles. To be strong and balanced, the four poles must be placed correctly through cooperation. Not every person needs to understand perfectly, but it does take guidance from those with a deeper understanding to make a strong tipi, ready for what the plains weather brings. A tipi is not just a structure, but a place of safety, gathering, and belonging.

The newly completed Iikaakiimaat (Eee-GAH-gee-maht) framework at Bow Valley College is also built around four poles, designed to ensure Indigenous understandings and perspectives are represented in curriculum and college policy. That Indigenous staff and students see their cultures reflected in all aspects of campus life.

Iikaakiimaat is a Blackfoot word that means “try harder” or “keep going”, sound encouragement that applies in all areas of life.
