Hi. My name is Dan, and I am a railfan based mainly on Pan Am Railways’ Districts 2 and 3. On August 23rd, 2018, we would make our second stab at seeing a specific 28N on the move. The previous night, we had managed to grab some shots of the train outlawed at MP-355 in Royalston, MA, but the train never moved. What we truly wanted was to see the train in motion, so we set out once we had info that the train had made it to Gardner, MA and that there was no 28N/287 standing in the train’s way from making it to the SanVel facility that afternoon. What was the worthy consist you ask? NS 6780 (SD60M) ex. CR with a Nathan P5 and E-Bell and PRLX 5013 (CW46AH) *ex. CSX*. With no immediate sign that 28N was arriving soon other than SanVel being clear, we decided to hop on Rte. 2 with assumptions that the train was outlawed somewhere between Shirley and Gardner. Fortunately, I would catch a quick heads-up that 28N had already departed Gardner as we were working west on Rte. 2, allowing us a chance at quickly turning around to catch up to 28N somewhere. Upon our arrival back in the Shirley/Ayer area, it would immediately be apparent that we had beaten the train with some time to spare. Eventually, our wait would pay off as the signals would finally turn on for some train with no other commuter trains nearby. Clearly being for an eastbound freight, we quickly got set just in time to hear an incoming P5 in the distance. 28N wasted no time as the same thundering by with their 38-rack train. Once 28N cleared Shirley, we would head back to grab some shots of an FRA train in Ayer before heading home, a nice bonus to our completed goal before heading home. As it usually is a majority of the time in the railfanning hobby, patience and sources paid off once again.
