The basics of org mode comes down to a few things:

Headings
Tags
Lists

If you can get down these basic concepts you’re ready to move onto bigger obstacles like agenda views, capture templates, attachments, exports, babel, and much more. But start with the basics!

Headings
Everything in org mode starts with headings in files. You open a file (with a .org extension, and you start adding headings.

Headings are identified by asterisks (*, or “stars”) and they are hierarchical, which means they can be nested in multiple levels.

Heading level 1
** Heading level 2
*** Heading level 3 (and so forth)

Headings can be rearranged in any order by holding down the Meta (or, Alt) key and using the arrows on your keyboard.

Tags

Tags are used to additional context to heading items.

To add a tag, you can hover over a heading and click C-c C-c. You will be prompted to add a tag. Tab auto completion works here as well, if you want to assign an existing tag.

Lists
Org mode offers some powerful list-making tools. You can use dashes to start lists:

Item 1
Item 2
Item 3
Then you can check boxes to these lists:

[ ] Take out garbage
[ ] Prepare tax declaration
[ ] Start a business
You can check and uncheck these items with C-c C-c. (This keystroke does a lot of magical things in org mode.)

You can also use progress indicators to see how much of the list is complete:

My list [/] [%]
[ ] Take out garbage
[ ] Prepare tax declaration
[ ] Start a business
Watch the progress indicators move as you complete your list.
