Backpacking the Bigelows - West Bigelow, Avery Peak - Bigelow Range - NE67 - Maine 4000 Footers

2 day backpacking trip over the Bigelow Range in Carrabassett Valley, Maine. Took the Firewarden's Trail up to Avery Col. Tagged Avery Peak and Bigelow West Peak for #59 on the New England 67 4000 footers list. Great weather the entire trip, a little hot. Caught sunset on Avery the first night before night hiking the AT back to my tent at the Bigelow Col tentsite.

Water was a bit of an issue on this trip, mostly due to the heat. I had to boil water at Horns Pond the second day and didn't really trust the "water boxes" near Avery Peak (see 7:25 mark in video) and the Horns. Horns Pond water source was a mud pit (see 27:46 mark in video) when I was there but the pond water was great.

I found that the distances on the official state map (link below) and the actual trail signs were completely different.
