When shopping for individual health insurance or choosing group health insurance through an employer, it s important to know the different kinds of plans that are available. One type of managed care plan is called a PPO or Preferred Provider Organization. This is the most common type of employer-sponsored health plan. The main thing to know about a PPO plan is that you have more freedom of choice about where you seek care, compared with other plans. A quick refresher: A network is a group of health care providers that insurance companies contract with to provide services to customers at lower rates. With a PPO plan, you ll receive the highest level of benefits when you visit any in-network provider. You re also free to visit out-of-network providers (meaning health care professionals, hospitals, or pharmacies not part of your plan's provider network) but you ll likely receive reduced coverage and benefits, meaning you may pay more out of pocket. Because PPO plans are less restrictive and more comprehensive than other plans, you might also end up paying higher monthly premiums for these types of plans.
