BEAUTIFUL MIDDLE FINGER
I’m cut you had to go
like a dead angel
Crazy in love
with a bout of the child
Now pick your boat
make it always open
On a shining light
Shining your light
a death I would like
Sailing on ancient waves
Tonight, tonight, alright
CHORUS
Maybe, we don’t want to die
Ghosts, they don’t want to live forever
Ladies, don’t apologise
like the Beatles said we will come together
Pack your bags and let’s go
Way down to Mexico
I believe - in the colour of light
I saw a man outside
breakdown in cold daylight
I could see - a black rose in his hand
Happens every day, Oh Oh, every night…
CHORUS
Maybe, we don’t want to die
Ghosts they don’t want to live forever
Ladies, don’t apologise - like the Beach Boys said we’ll come together
Come together, you wanna live forever, it's now or never… Come on
Come together, wanna live forever, it's now or never… Come on
Middle with HARP
Maybe, we don’t want to die
Ghosts they don’t want to live forever
Ladies, don’t apologise
like the Beatles said we will come together
Come together, wanna live forever, it's now or never
Come on
Come together, wanna live forever, it's now or never
Come on
Description
Que catchy guitar riff, add harmonica, then a swinging beat, then lead us to CB Ghost’s signature and original vocal style (and lyrics) - and we are away with Beautiful Middle Finger. Coming in at 4 min and 20 seconds CB Ghost’s third single is mathematically longer than your standard single - but like a good Beatles song manages to get you off without feeling like he’s overstayed his welcome. From the first line images and themes are subconsciously drip feed into your mind. “Dead angle”, “crazy in love with a bout of the child”, “sailing on ancient waves”, “I could see, a black rose in his hand”, just some examples of where this song takes you lyrically. The folk-rock rhythm and country like sway moves your hips but doesn’t leave your heart and mind behind with benign commentary or cliches. While the chorus is simply an elevated version of the same guitar riff and similar strumming style, it certainly lifts you and adds that needed meat on the bone musically while talking about Ghosts not wanting to live forever, and how ladies don’t apologise. Somehow CB has a believe it all makes sense. Then with a drop of positivity we are reminded “we’ll come together”, as so eloquently worded by the Beatles all those years ago (yes, he mentions them by name along with The Beach Boys). The classic masters of pop references aside this is a musician finding his own voice and style that floats between a few genres while recking of originality in its DNA make up. Beautiful Middle Finger is a good time song, with a silly title from a serious song writer who loves to have fun and not take things too seriously.
