The outward surface of the tongue is also known as the dorsal aspect of the tongue, and is divided longitudinally into equal halves by the
median sulcus of the tongue. At the posterior end of the median sulcus is the foramen cecum, which also marks the beginning of the terminal sulcus of the tongue

The terminal sulcus is a shallow groove, or line that runs or diverges anterolaterally from the foramen cecum towards the margins (borders) of the tongue. The terminal sulcus divides the tongue into two parts, a posterior pharyngeal part, and an anterior oral part.

The pharyngeal part of the tongue is innervated by the glossopharyngeal nerve, while the oral part of the tongue receives its nerve supply from the lingual nerve (a branch of the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve) for its somatosensory perception, and by the chorda tympani (a branch of the facial nerve) for taste perception.

Both parts of the tongue develop from different pharyngeal arches.
