Teach Your Children - CSN Cover

Amateur video / performance of the song Teach Your Children written by Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills, and Nash (the first release of it included Neil Young as well).

My son Alec and I like to make these videos when ever we get together, which isn't often due to the distance apart that we live. Obviously portions of the song were pre-recorded (all of it was). The vocals are true 3 part harmony, 2 parts performed by me and 1 part by Alec. And there are 3 guitar parts as well, 2 parts performed by Alec and 1 part by me). As in all of my videos no vocal tuning was used or any other post production tricks. Just basic sound enhancements like compression, reverb, and chorus.

The original plan was to have my wife Lauri singing the 3rd harmony but she came down with a cold and couldn't do it. The song choice was her idea. We had been contemplating for weeks what song to do. When Lauri suggested this one I immediately knew it was a great choice, with the parent and child aspect of it fitting the songs message perfectly.

I suppose, like most songs, it has different meaning to everyone. To me the song is about loving each other despite our differences. Learning from each other and understanding that we are who we are because of the sum our life experiences, which will always be different for everyone. Because of that we may truly never fully understand one another and we need to be careful those differences never develop into divisiveness.

Although originally written during the turbulent Vietnam era, it's a message that may be needed even more as we enter into 2020. Happy New Year to all and may it be a year of peace, love, and understanding among everyone.
