(3 Mar 2005) SHOTLIST

1. Exterior of main plaza in Montevideo
2. Wide of downtown street
3. Argentine President Nestor Kirchner, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez at photo opportunity
4. SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese) Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil:
"I think this is the only way we can strengthen the Mercosur (trade bloc) and South America. I am convinced that we are living through an historic moment of integration and it is very important because we start, now, to believe in ourselves."
5. Cutaway of media
6. Kirchner leaving news conference
7. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Rafael Bielsa, Foreign Minister of Argentina:
"Q: Does this mean that you will negotiate economic issues as a bloc?
A: Well, yes. This is precisely what we want to do - in economic issues, energy issues, in production and industrial issues, in air and sea transport - and that is why we have decided to convene three more meetings within the next 40 days."
8. Wide of news conference
9. Medium Chavez at news conference
10. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Hugo Chavez, President of Venezuela:
"In summary, it''s not that the FTAA (Free Trade Agreement of the Americas) is in danger - the FTAA is dead. Now we''re working on a new model of integration, whatever you want to call it, it''s new. It''s not the FTAA. What will happen at the Buenos Aires summit? I don''t know. Remember the Summit of the Americas in Buenos Aires in May. It would be wonderful for me to breathe the Buenos Aires of old. So we''ll see what happens at the summit. Many things could happen, but what won''t happen is that they''ll revive what isn''t able to be revived. The FTAA is dead. May it rest in peace forever."
11. Cutaway of media
12. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Hugo Chavez, President of Venezuela:
"Superman, superman... but we have red kryptonite. There''s red kryptonite and there''s green kryptonite. We have the red kind. We''ve already announced this, (Cuban President) Fidel (Castro) has also, because he has the information through other channels, that in Washington they''re definitely thinking that the solution is to kill Hugo Chavez."
13. Cutaway of media
14. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Hugo Chavez, President of Venezuela:
"If that were to happen, the United States can forget about getting even a drop of petroleum from Venezuela. I am absolutely sure of that."
15. Wide news conference ending

STORYLINE

The presidents of Argentina, Venezuela and Brazil said on Wednesday they would jointly negotiate their countries'' debt to multilateral lending institutions.

Argentine President Nestor Kirchner, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva made the announcement after meeting in Montevideo, Uruguay.

The three leaders had attended the inauguration on Tuesday of Uruguayan President Tabare Vasquez.

Vasquez joins Kirchner, da Silva and Chavez as part of a reinvigorated, but far less ideological, movement of leftist leaders who have taken office in Latin America.

Most analysts say the new leftists, with the exception of the more populist Chavez, are seeking to balance social welfare programmes and a greater role for the state with moderate pro-market economic policies in the style of Europe''s Social Democrats.

After meeting with his Argentine and Brazilian counterparts, Chavez told reporters in Montevideo that the US-backed negotiations to reach Free Trade Agreement of the Americas are dead.

He said Latin American leaders are working on a new "model of integration" to replace the trade agreement.
