"HOLLYWOOD AND THE FEMININE FORM DIVINE"- PAULETTE GODDARD. She was born Pauline Marion Levy on June 3,1910,in Whitestone Landing,New York. Her father was Joseph Russell Levy,and her mother was Alta Mae Goddard. The young Goddard began modeling at an early age at Saks Fifth Avenue and Hattie Carnegie to help support her mother. In 1926 she made her stage debut on Broadway as a dancer in Florenz Ziegfeld's "No Foolin". In 1929 Goddard came to Hollywood where she appeared in a Laurel and Hardy short film,"Berth Marks". In 1932 she signed with producer Samuel Goldwyn,and starred in "The Kid From Spain". Later Paulette Goddard met Charlie Chaplin who starred her in "Modern Times" in 1936,and stardom soon followed. Producer David O. Selznick picked up her movie contract in 1938,and co-starred her with Janet Gaynor in "The Young In Heart",and later loaned her out to M.G.M. in 1939 to star her in the all-female cast of "The Women" with the likes of Norma Shearer and Joan Crawford. Paulette Goddard was in the lead to star as Scarlett O'Hara in David O. Selznick's "Gone With The Wind" when she was replaced at the eleventh hour by "dark horse" Vivien Leigh. Paulette Goddard had a special screen presence,usually portraying a wise cracking,intelligent,sophisticated woman,with an underlying,latent sexuality. She was another favorite pin-up girl of American G.I.'s during World War II,and her legs were nearly as famous as those of Betty Grable. Vital stats-Hair brown,Eyes blue,Height 5'3". You don't have to be a [Sigmund Freud] to know that the most fascinating person in the world-actors or anybody-is yourself". Paulette Goddard made 39 feature films,and had a show business career that lasted forty-three years which included stage,screen,radio,and television.
