If you’ve ever felt like giving up on intuitive eating because it just doesn't seem to work for you, you’re not alone. Before you decide it’s not for you, let’s explore some common hurdles that might be standing in your way.

Intuitive eating is all about learning to be more in touch with your hunger and fullness cues and making food choices free from the noise of diet rules and societal expectations. It promises a healthier relationship with food and our bodies, but it often sounds too good to be true. That’s why I want to share these hurdles and give you practical tips on how to navigate them.

One major hurdle is the challenge of ditching the diet mentality. This foundational principle of intuitive eating requires us to let go of the pursuit of weight loss and embrace food decisions that prioritize our health and satisfaction over our body size. It’s tough, especially if you’ve spent a lifetime chasing a certain body image. Remember, there’s no permanent decision—allow yourself to evolve and change your focus as needed.

Another significant barrier is the concept of giving yourself unconditional permission to eat what you want. This can be tricky because it involves not only behavioral change but also emotional acceptance. If you find yourself using permission as an excuse to eat, it might feel counterproductive. The key is to embrace this permission genuinely, without guilt or judgment.

Moreover, intuitive eating isn’t just a simple switch you flip—it involves embracing its ten principles, which can seem overwhelming. My advice? Start with one principle that resonates most with you. This focus can simplify the process and make it feel less daunting.

Today, I also touched on the importance of planning in intuitive eating. While intuitive eating encourages flexibility, having some plan can prevent defaulting to less satisfying convenience foods. Lastly, remember that intuitive eating is nuanced. It requires patience, experimentation, and learning from mistakes.
