Hay fever sufferers who take certain medications may be at risk of impaired driving, according to an investigation by automotive news channel James Foxall. The number of UK citizens suffering from hay fever has increased in recent years, with almost half the population now affected, according to research by Allergy UK. To combat symptoms, many sufferers turn to over-the-counter antihistamine medication. However, some of these medications can cause drowsiness, which can impair driving ability. First-generation antihistamines, such as chlorphenamine and promethazine, can cause drowsiness, while second-generation antihistamines, including cetirizine and loratadine, are less likely to make users sleepy. However, different drugs can have different effects on individuals, with some people finding supposedly non-drowsy medications still make them feel sleepy. Driving while drowsy can be as dangerous as drink-driving, according to road safety charity Brake. It is illegal to drive with drugs in the system that impair driving ability, and convictions can result in a minimum one-year ban, an unlimited fine, up to six months in prison and a criminal record.
