Ghana’s railway dream is finally here! 🚆 On October 1, 2025, the Tema–Mpakadan Railway Line officially begins full commercial operations. Funded by the India Exim Bank ($447M) and built by Afcons Infrastructure, this 97.7 km standard gauge line connects Tema Port to Mpakadan near the Volta Lake—linking Ghana’s coast to inland trade routes.

But this project hasn’t come without controversy. The new Polish trains from Pesa have been heavily criticized as too short, too expensive, and incomplete—with promised coaches never arriving. Add to that the April 2024 test accident, vandalism of track components, and years of delays, and the railway has been both celebrated and attacked.

Under the NPP government led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the project was launched. Now, under the NDC and John Dramani Mahama, the line is part of the Big Push Project and the ambitious 24-Hour Economy Vision—with plans to expand railways nationwide and make Ghana a logistics hub for West Africa.
