This video shows the working of a paper based smart tag, having rigid microchips mounted mounted on screen printed antenna. The robust integration of microchips on flexible substrates is challenging due to small pitch of their contact pads and the differences in mechanical and thermal requirements. The smart tag shown in this video was obtained after exploring different substrate-adhesives to obtain a facile technique for integrating NFC microchips on flexible substrates. Following the successful integration, the smart tags were characterised under large number of bending cycles to demonstrate reliable performance in the NFC reading range. The hybrid or heterogenous integration of silicon technologies and printed electronics, exemplified through this work, is a promising approach for high-performance flexible electronics.
