We stayed Kashiwaya Honten in Bessho Onsen, Ueda City, Nagano Prefecture.

Bessho Onsen is the oldest hot spring in Nagano, said to have been in operation for 1,400 years, and is a historic hot spring that appears in a passage of Sei Shonagon's The Pillow Book. Although it is a small hot spring town, I have been paying attention to it for a long time as it is a hot spring town with many highly rated inns.

When the opportunity arose to visit, I chose Kashiwaya Main Branch. It is a long-established inn that has been in operation since before the war, and the reason I chose it was that it was just renovated in 2024.

Kashiwaya Honten, which was founded more than 100 years ago, was run by a different owner along with Kashiwaya Besso and others, but in the early Showa period, the company fell into financial difficulties and only Honten was put up for sale. The current president's great-grandfather took over the business and it continues to this day.

After that, Kashiwaya Besso and others went out of business, and Kashiwaya Honten conveys its history.

The newly renovated building is a comfortable space enveloped in a modern Japanese atmosphere. The room was also enveloped in the scent of wood, and the time spent in the two rooms was wonderful, larger than expected. After taking a rest in the large room after touring the baths, it was already late at night.

What's more, the cost performance is particularly noteworthy. The size of the room we stayed in and the price are unique to Bessho Onsen, where highly rated inns gather. In addition to the great food and the large amount of baths, the price was so low that it made me worry.

Bessho Onsen is a place where you can feel the history of the area, with sights such as the Kitamuki Kannon Bodhisattva and the National Treasure-discovered Three-story Pagoda. It's also fun to get a free ticket for the outdoor bath at the counter and walk around the baths. The quality of the hot springs at Kashiwaya Main Branch, especially the private baths, was also excellent, and there wasn't enough time to enjoy them all.

I hope everyone will enjoy the two days and one night we spent together. There are many ryokans in Bessho Onsen that I would like to visit, so I think I will be visiting them many times in the future.
