Thousands of revelers took to the streets of Rio's bohemian Santa Teresa neighborhood on Friday to celebrate the first official day of Carnival at the Carmelitas street party.
The street carnival also marked its 25th anniversary this year.
Legend has it that a Carmelite nun jumped over the convent's walls to join the Rio street Carnival parties and only came back four days later when Carnival ended, hence why band members and some revelers dress up in religious habit.
Rio de Janeiro is expected to attract more than 900 thousand tourists to both its street carnival parties and Carnival parade at the Sambodrome over the next five days.
Tha Carmelitas party returns to the streets on the last day of festivities, when the nuns are said to return to their cloistered existence.
The Carnival runs from 13 February through 17 February.
