Where to put your focus point - shallow DOF

Where to focus and how much of the image should be in focus? It can be a difficult question to answer, especially when you are shooting flowers with the selective focus technique. We want to create a dreamy painterly look straight out of the camera. And to do this we use a shallow dapth of field. Should the focus sit on the front of the flower, the center, on the stamen or on the petals. It can be really challenging to get it right. I just ask myself one question: what part of the flower asks most attention. Actually this will work on all types of photography not only on macro or close-up photography.
