Jackson Lake is a sag pond created by the San Andreas Fault . The San Andreas Fault cuts a path across Southern California, but the infamous fault has created a string of sparkling lakes known as “sag ponds” along its course.

You’ve probably passed, swam in, or fished in one of these tiny lakes and never even realized this jewel of nature was created by such an ominous force. It’s a weird name, but the term makes sense when you understand how they are created.

A sag pond is a body of water that has collected in a depression formed between the two sides of an active strike-slip fault zone, such as the San Andreas. These ponds are usually small and narrow, and lay lengthwise directly over the fault.

One of the few lakes in the San Gabriels, Jackson Lake is a small, serene lake set among groves of oak and Jeffrey pine alongside the Big Pines Highway west of Wrightwood, California. Created by a depression above the San Andreas Fault, which runs beneath the lake, Jackson Lake is what is known as a “sag pond,” and is one of many such features found along the notorious fault.
