After a day of rest, I set out to discover Baguio, a city rich in history and culture. Known as the first hill station in Asia, Baguio was developed during the American colonial period and sits 1,500 meters above sea level. The city is a melting pot of languages and cultures, making it a fascinating place to explore.
I booked a cozy hotel for 450 pesos through Agoda and set out to see the city. Despite its size, Baguio still has that quaint mountain charm. I visited a Nepali restaurant but, unfortunately, didn't meet any fellow Nepalis. I enjoyed a warm cup of tea before heading to the famous night market, which starts at 9 PM. The cool, rainy weather added to the unique atmosphere of the city.
From SM Mall to the botanical garden, Baguio offers a mix of modern and natural attractions, making it a must-visit in the Philippines."
Baguio, often referred to as the "Summer Capital of the Philippines," has a rich history that dates back to the American colonial period. Originally, the area was home to the Ibaloi people, an indigenous group who practiced farming in the region. The city's modern history began when the Americans established Baguio as a hill station in the early 20th century, around 1900, due to its cool climate, which provided a reprieve from the heat of the lowlands.
The city was designed by the American architect Daniel Burnham, who envisioned Baguio as a garden city with wide streets and large open spaces. The famous Burnham Park, which remains a central feature of Baguio, is named after him. Baguio's development as a summer retreat was further enhanced by the construction of Kennon Road, which made the city more accessible.
Baguio has also played a significant role in Philippine history. During World War II, it was occupied by Japanese forces and later served as the site where General Tomoyuki Yamashita, the commander of Japanese forces in the Philippines, formally surrendered to the Allied forces in 1945, effectively ending the war in the Philippines.
Today, Baguio is known for its cool climate, pine trees, and vibrant cultural scene. It remains a popular destination for both locals and tourists seeking to escape the heat of the lowlands. The city's unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty continues to make it a significant place in the Philippines.
