Описание к видео Red-shanked Douc at Bach Ma National Park

Red-shanked Douc (Pygathrix nemaeus) is often referred to as the “queen of primates” due to its striking appearance and elegant movements.

Appearance: Males weigh between 7–10 kg, while females weigh 5–8 kg. Body is greyish-blue back, white belly, and a distinctive red patch on the lower legs (shanks), giving the species its name. Bright orange face with a pale blue eyelid, a white beard, and a yellow-orange throat patch. Long, black arms and red lower legs, with hands and feet adapted for gripping branches. Long, white tail used for balance as they move through the trees.

Size: Males typically measuring 60–70 cm in body length, females slightly smaller.

Habitat: Inhabits primary and secondary forests and often found in hilly or mountainous areas. Found in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, primarily in the Annamite Mountains and the Central Highlands.

Behaviour: Primarily folivorous, feeding on leaves, fruits, seeds, flowers, and bark. They are selective feeders, often choosing young, tender leaves and fruits. Diurnal and arboreal, spending most of their time in the forest canopy foraging in groups. They are known to travel long distances in search of food. Highly social, living in groups of 4–50 individuals. These groups consist of multiple males and females, often with a dominant male leading.

Breeding: Lasts about 165–190 days, with females giving birth to a single offspring. Mothers are the primary caregivers, though other group members may also assist. Infants are nursed for about a year and remain dependent on their mothers for several more months. Can live up to 25 years in the wild, and longer in captivity.

Vocalisation: Uses a variety of vocalizations, body postures, and facial expressions to communicate with group members.

Conservation Status: Critically Endangered, with populations declining due to habitat loss and hunting.
