পুরাণ হল হিন্দুদের প্রাচীন ধৰ্মীয় সাহিত্য | বিভিন্ন ধরণের পুরাণ রয়েছে। মহাবিশ্ব ও জীবজগত সম্পর্কীয় সমস্ত বিষয়ই পুরাণের অন্তর্ভুক্ত। যেমন-বিশ্ব ব্রহ্মাণ্ডের সৃষ্টি তত্ত্ব, দেবদেবীদের কথা,ঈশ্বরের অবতার তত্ত্ব, রাজা, ঋষি প্রভৃতির বংশ পরম্পরার কাহিনী, ধর্মতত্ত্ব, পূজো- আচ্চা, দর্শন, চিকিৎসা, জ্যোতির্বিদ্যা, জ্যোতিষ, ব্যাকরণ,বৃত্তি ইত্যাদি সমস্ত বিষয়েই বিভিন্ন পুরাণ আলোকপাত করে।

Puranas are ancient religious literature of Hindus There are different types of Puranas. All matters related to the universe and the living world are included in the Puranas. For example, various Puranas shed light on the creation theory of the universe, Gods and Goddesses, God's incarnation theory, kings, sages, etc., theology, worship, philosophy, medicine, astronomy, astrology, grammar, scholarship etc.
The Puranas, according to Flood, have traditionally been classified according to three qualities (guna) which are inherent in existence, namely the quality of light or purity (sattva), passion (rajas), and darkness or inertia (tamas), with each quality having six puranas focused, but not exclusively, upon a single deity.
