In 1943 Bengal, one human being died every three seconds. This was not a famine.

While the world remembers World War II as a fight for freedom, 10 million Bengalis were systematically starved to death under British rule. The Bengal famine of 1943 is often described as a “natural disaster.” That description is false—and dangerously incomplete.

This catastrophe did not begin in 1943. Its roots stretch back nearly 200 years, to the arrival of the British East India Company. Bengal, once among the richest regions on Earth, was transformed into a colonial extraction zone. Wealth was siphoned out. Agriculture was reshaped to serve imperial profit, not local survival. By the time the British Crown assumed control, Bengal was already fragile—its resilience stripped away.

And then came the war.

Despite claims of food scarcity, Bengal’s rice harvest in 1943 was higher than in 1941, a year without mass starvation. Food existed. People died because policy decided they could.

Under the British Denial Policy, over 66,000 boats—the lifelines of Bengal’s delta—were destroyed. Rice labeled as “surplus” was seized, leaving villages with nothing. As bodies collapsed on the streets of Kolkata, the Empire exported over 70,000 tons of rice to build wartime buffer stocks for Europe.

Prices skyrocketed by 950%. A lifetime of savings couldn’t buy a week of food.

When informed that millions were dying, Winston Churchill mocked the victims, blocked emergency wheat shipments from Australia and Canada, and blamed Indians for their own starvation. Ships carrying food sailed past Indian shores—untouched.

Starvation weakened bodies. Then disease finished the job. Cholera, malaria, and smallpox tore through the population. Tens of thousands died each month, with just 13,000 hospital beds available for millions.

This was not nature’s failure.
This was a colonial crime.
A famine engineered by policy.
A genocide by ledger.

The Bengal famine deserves to be remembered—not as an accident, but as a warning.
