On Part 2 of my Aklan Adventure, I decided to explore the western towns of the province using the traditional jeepneys. These jeepneys were the original form of transportation when travelling from Kalibo to Caticlan during the early days of Boracay. There was no airport in Caticlan before, no aircon buses from Kalibo to Caticlan, and the only way to reach Boracay was either to fly to Kalibo or take the ferry to the Port of Dumaguit in New Washington and then take the local jeepneys on a dusty road to Caticlan before riding an ordinary banca to Boracay.
I started my journey at the Western Jeepney Terminal and took a low-roof Multicab to Makato. Makato was actually established in the 13th century during the arrival of the Bornean datus. In Makato, I visited its century-old Holy Child Jesus Parish Church, its beautiful plaza, Makato Sports Complex, its old and new Town Hall, and its lively Public Market where I bought a native hat.
My next jeepney stop was Tangalan. It is famous for Jawili Falls which I visited previously, but this time my focus was its heritage attractions such as its Saint John Nepomucene Church which was constructed through forced labor from 1861 to 1889. At the plaza, I tried the 10-peso siopao and the 20-peso mais con yelo.
From Tangalan, Itook another jeepney to Ibajay, one of the oldest towns in the province. In Ibajay, I was very fortunate to see the ruins of the original church of St. Peter the Apostle, as well as other attractions such as the century-old trees, Plaza Rizal, several ancestral houses, Gabaldon school, and the old entrance of the Public Market.
From Ibajay, I tried to ride the jeepney going to Caticlan but cannot find one, and so I decided to take an aircon Ceres Bus to Caticlan.
It was a great day of exploring the western towns between Kalibo and Caticlan even if I did not go all the way using the old jeepneys. But it was fun and filled with discoveries just the same.
