Mammut steps into a new logistics age with Dematic

A technical and logistical Mammut project in the truest sense of the word is the new highly automated distribution center of the Mammut Sports Group at Wolfertschwenden in the Allgäu. The responsible decision makers of the Swiss alpine and snow sports outfitter initially favoured a manual warehouse solution but after an intensive ROI analysis decided to continue with an automated distribution center by Dematic.

Recently the outfitter known for innovation and quality was able not only to celebrate its 150-year anniversary, but in November also imlemented its new distribution centre at Wolfertschwenden 15 km south of Memmingen directly on the highway A7 and thus established a new milestone. In the company's history this Mammut project of about 25 million euros is the largest investment since the foundation of the company which started as an artisanal rope-maker.

Just in the past year the Mammut Sports Group (MSG) with head office in Seon/Switzerland, whose parent company is the Conzzeta Group, compared to the previous year grew by approximately 10%. The growth markets in Asia, for example South Korea, contributed to this but equally in addition, the German market which is the most important in Europe. For this reason Mammut has already had to move twice since the German company was established in 1987.

In the past Mammut had two main warehouses in Europe, one in Seon in Switzerland and one in Memmingen. For space reasons both storage facilities were additionally still housed in several buildings. The customs clearance took place when the goods entered the warehouse, this meant however that when moving around stocks in the sense of inventory optimisation, customs clearance was needed a second time. Thus it was a case of coming to grips, apart from redundancy of the two main warehouses, with a substantial complexity in respect to the various storage sites. For strategic reasons and since approximately 70% of the turnover was generated abroad, predominantly in the European Union, the decision for a distribution centre fell on Germany.
