This hike takes place in the George Washington National Forest south of Strasburg, VA. The goal of this hike is to check out Buzzard Rock and then on to a minor peak. This trail is a moderately easy class 1 trail. The trail offers great views to the north, east, and west of Meneka Peak.

The Hike I did is as follows. The trailhead, located on Mountain Rd/VA619, has plenty of parking but will still fill up quickly on weekends and holidays. The trail starts in the south corner of the parking lot. Passing the hiking sign I followed the white-blazed, Buzzard Rock trail. The trail crosses multiple streams within the first half mile or so. At the 1-mile mark, there is a large campsite. The trail becomes steeper from here, though never really steep. 1.5 miles in I gained the ridge. There is a small campsite here with great views to the north and the Passage Creek and the Fort Valley Trout Farm (fish hatchery). After another ½ mile up the trail, the Buzzard Rock begins and stretches north for approximately .3 miles. Buzzard Rock offers great views across the valley to Meneka Peak, down to steep cliffs to Fort Valley road, and south into Fort Valley. This is a fun area to explore, but the dog and I continued on up the trail toward Shawl Gap. At 2.2 miles we passed a small campsite. The trail continues up until finally reaching a small summit of 3.2 miles. To the east of the summit, there is a nice view to the east and the Shenandoah Valley and Shenandoah National Park. From there retrace your steps back to the parking lot.
