Karimunjawa is a chain of 27 islands in the Java Sea between Java and Borneo. It's known for the Karimunjawa National Park, a marine conservation area with mangrove forests, beaches and coral reefs.

Although (in non-Covid times) there are direct flights from Surabaya to Karimunjawa, we like to make road trips so we drove our campervan Amelia from Malang to Jepara (north Java) and took a boat to the islands.

At this time Covid regulations require proof of vaccination and a negative Antigen test before getting to the islands. The population on the island is for 85% vaccinated.

Thanks to our friends Ryan and Selvie in Jepara who were kind enough to let us park our car at their house en help us out with organising our trip.
The Kartini Ferry Terminal offers long term (overnight) car parking for around Rp.50.000, - (3 Euro) per 3 days.

The fast boat from Jepara to Karimunjawa is operated by Express Bahari and runs averagely 3 days per week to the islands and 3 days per week back to the mainland. Please the check boat schedule before traveling to Jepara as it is subject to changes due to weather conditions. Travel time is about 2 hours.

One way ticket Rp. 165.000 (10 Euro) normal class and Rp. 195.000 (12 Euro) for VIP class. A ticket for infants costs Rp. 20.000 (1.25 Euro).

Motorcycle rent per day: Rp. 75.000 (4,5 Euro)
Island hopping/snorkeling tours: as of Rp. 150.000 (8 Euro) per person in a shared boat and about Rp. 550.000 (34 Euro) in a private boat. Rp. 30.000 (1,5 euro) for a snorkeling set.
