In the narrow lanes and crowded markets of Old Delhi, a crime unfolded that shook the conscience of many. The incident took place in the Central Delhi area near Jama Masjid, where a foreign family had come seeking hope for their ailing daughter — but instead became victims of betrayal.

A man from Uzbekistan had traveled to India for his minor daughter’s cancer treatment in Gurugram. Amid the stress of hospital visits and medical procedures, he decided to take his family out for a brief visit to Old Delhi on January 15, hoping to give them a moment of relief. The bustling Jama Masjid market, filled with shoppers and tourists, seemed like the perfect place to explore.

But in that very crowd, a well-planned theft was taking place.

While walking through the market, the man suddenly realized that 7,200 US dollars were missing from his bag — 72 notes of 100 dollars each. This was the money carefully arranged for his daughter’s medical expenses. In a matter of seconds, the father, already burdened by his child’s illness, found himself facing yet another devastating blow.

A complaint was immediately lodged at the local police station. Considering the sensitivity of the case — involving a foreign national and medical emergency funds — the police launched a swift investigation. CCTV footage from the surrounding area was examined thoroughly.

Two young faces repeatedly appeared in the footage — a 15-year-old boy and his 13-year-old sister from New Seelampur. Both minors were detained for questioning. Initially, they tried to appear innocent, but as evidence mounted, the truth came out.

The real mastermind behind the crime was their own father.

According to the police investigation, the father would send his children into crowded marketplaces to carry out thefts while he stayed at a distance to avoid suspicion. The stolen money would ultimately go to him. He used his own children as shields to protect himself from the law.

The police soon arrested the father. From his possession, 2,500 US dollars and the victim’s ATM card were recovered. A search of his residence led to the recovery of another 4,000 US dollars. Additionally, a mobile phone worth ₹48,000, allegedly purchased using the stolen money, and ₹4,700 in Indian currency were also seized.

Further investigation revealed that the accused father had a prior criminal record and had previously been involved in a robbery case, indicating he was a habitual offender. This time, however, he crossed a line by dragging his own children into crime.

The case presents a stark contrast — on one side, a father who traveled thousands of miles to save his daughter’s life; on the other, a father who sacrificed his children’s innocence for illegal gains.

Though the police acted swiftly and brought the accused to justice, the incident raises troubling questions. When a parent becomes the architect of crime and turns children into tools, it reflects a deeper crisis within society.

What happened in the crowded lanes of Old Delhi was not just a theft of money — it was a theft of trust and childhood.
