Shiva temple – Itharna

Itharna is a small village on mountain top near Bhogpur, approximately 35 km from Rishikesh. The route is Rishikesh- Ranipokhari_- Bhogpur- Itharna. It’s an uncrowded place, not known by many people. The entire village has only few houses and a Shiva temple. Me and my brother planned a trip to this Shiva temple one Sunday and I am sharing my experiences in this post. It’s a half day trip and a peaceful place to visit and relax.

Though the google maps showed only one hour drive, we took almost 1 hour 45 minutes to reach the temple from Rishikesh. The roads were good initially, but later may be approx. 8- 10 kms towards the temple the roads were not so good. The roads are steep, narrow and winding, so only experienced drivers can drive. If you are driving two wheelers, wearing helmets is mandatory.


The temple complex is located on hill top. It has 4 separate sanctum sanctorums, one each for Lord Shiva, Lord Nagaraj, Goddess Chamundi Devi and Lord Hanuman. The temple is so serene, peaceful and spiritual. The music of bell sounds and the breeze with the panoramic scenic view of the mountains is a perfect combination to rejuvenate one’s soul.

There is a shop selling pooja items and the cost ranges from Rs 60 to Rs 110. Unlike in the temples in South India, where devotees are not allowed inside the main Sanctum sanctorum, here we can go inside and do pooja yourself. There is also a shop selling tea, maggi, biscuits and chocolates as well. But it is preferable to carry your own food and snacks. It is hot in summers, but when we went the weather was just perfect to enjoy.
