Hello, I'm Dr. Arul Ebenezer Daniel. I am here to explain you about coronary angiogram. So what is an angiogram? So angiogram is basically, it's a diagnostic test. It is not a treatment. It is a diagnostic test. What do you diagnose? You diagnose if there are any blocks in the blood vessels. So uh angiogram can be done in any part of the body. So you do it in the heart, you call it the coronary angiogram. You do it in the brain, you call it cerebral angiogram and so on. so forth. So how does it done? It can be done in two different ways. There is something called a CT coronary angiogram and another is the invasive coronary angiogram. So what is a CT coronary angiogram? So they inject a dye in your body and you need to lie down on the CT scan and they make images of your blood vessels which is flowing to the heart and they will check whether there are blocks in the heart or not. Now next coming to the conventional regular angiogram. Okay, so how does a regular angiogram is done? So we access the blood vessels either through the hand or through the leg and we insert catheter which goes directly to the heart and we inject a dye into the heart and we check it will take around 10 to 15 minutes the whole procedure is 10 to 15 minutes and it is done under local anesthesia and the person who's undergoing the test will be wide awake and it can be interacting with the cardiologist. You will be wondering, oh my god doctor, are you sending a catheter into my heart? Yes, we do that. Is it very painful? No, absolutely not. There will not be any pain while the catheter is going into the heart. And it is a gold standard for getting the coronary arteries checked. uh Why can't I just do a CT angiogram instead of a coronary angiogram? Really, I'm scared about the coronary angiogram. So, uh for whom does the CT angiogram is recommended and whom does the coronary angiogram is recommended. So CT angiogram is basically recommended for first once when you're really afraid of you know the catheters being inserted into your body and it is oh also recommended for the people who you know the chances of you having the disease is very very less okay young people who have got a vague chest discomfort they are really afraid of the you know heart whether they will get a heart attack or not so For them, the CT angiogram is a very, very easy, non-invasive procedure. But in people who uh where the chances of you having blocks are high, an elderly gentleman, a diabetic gentleman, a smoker, then the regular coronary angiogram is done. So how many days you need to be in the hospital? Just a day. You come in the morning, you do the procedure and then go after three, four hours. So that's all. So uh can it be done the same way for CT angiogram? Yes.
