As you can see in these old Judo videos, there were lots of techniques they used back then that they don’t use today. But what happened? Why don't we see Judo practice these techniques anymore? I believe, in order to make Judo more popular, they had to change it. They did this by removing lots of techniques that were too dangerous for competitions. They also began focusing more on the sport aspect rather than the art aspect. As a result lots of valuable techniques were kicked to the waist-side. Judo is now a huge sport favoring big throws rather than the art. I believe Karo Parisyan brought back the art of Judo. He brought back some of these old lost techniques and made them new again. Case in point, The kamura takedown. Here is karo using this technique to perfection. As a result of this, I see lots of people using this old technique today. In wrestling they call it a key-lock throw. It is similar but not the same. Some may argue it is but it doesn’t really matter. Just have fun and train safe!
