Afternoon with Charlie Movalli

In Autumn of 2010, Charlie Movalli
and his wife, Dale, allowed us to
spend an afternoon in their home and
studios; showing us their amazing
collection of art, and discussing
Charlie’s life, career, and
remembrances; his own techniques and
preferences, and those he observed
among the many famous artists who
were his friends and mentors.


Charlie was irrepressible. Skipping
from topic to topic, the session was
a little like going through an
unsorted box of pictures and
listening as he shared a memory or a
lesson or a story each image brought
to mind.


Thus, this isn’t a tribute to
Charlie. He certainly deserves one,
but it will have to come from someone
more talented than we. Rather, it
is a glimpse into what it would be
like to sit with him for an hour and
experience the incomparable intellect
and unique spirit of this wonderful
Gloucester artist.
