► Not all skin bleeding looks the same! Understanding the terminology used to describe bleeding into the skin is crucial for diagnosing different medical conditions. These terms are not interchangeable—they each indicate different causes and clinical implications.

Here’s what you need to know:

Petechiae – Tiny red or purple spots smaller than 3mm, caused by small capillary hemorrhages. Often seen in thrombocytopenia or viral infections.
Purpura – Larger patches of bleeding under the skin greater than 3mm but usually under 1 cm. This can be associated with vasculitis, clotting disorders, or certain medications.
Ecchymosis – A bruise-like area of bleeding larger than 1 cm, often due to trauma or coagulation disorders.
Palpable Purpura – Unlike regular purpura, palpable purpura is raised and can be felt under the fingertips. This suggests inflammatory damage to blood vessels, such as in vasculitis.

He obtained his PhD from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in 2004. Currently, he is Director of the Addiction Recovery Clinic and Codirector of Clinician Educator Distinctions Pathway at Yale School of Medicine. Because of his achievements, he earned the Faculty Teacher of the Year award from the Yale Primary Care Residency Program in 2009 and 2017.
