Number 10. D’banj was born as Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo on 9th June 1980 in Zaria, a major city in Kaduna State. While he was born in the Northern, Hausa-dominant part of Nigeria, D’banj is Yoruba. His father is an indigene of Shagamu, Ogun State.
Number 9. Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo or D’banj was on his way to becoming a military officer like his father before he found music or music found him. He had been enrolled in a military school at the age of 11 but left because he didn’t like the school environment. He would later complete his education in another military school, this time, one owned by the Nigerian Navy.
Number 8. You may not be aware but D'banj dropped out of the university twice. The first time, he quit the Lagos State University where he was studying mechanical engineering because the staff kept striking, disrupting academic activities.
Number 7. D’banj met Don Jazzy while working as a night guard in London in the early 2000s. He, Don Jazzy and JJC, who now goes by JJC Skillz, formed a group called 419 Squad.
At the time, he had already dropped out of his mechanical engineering course and was trying to eat, pay his bills and enjoy music. In fact, he once said that he enjoyed the night guard duty because he could listen to music the whole night. However, D’banj was not just cut out to be a music critic, he should be making music and that is what Don Jazzy told him.
Number 6. D’banj and Don Jazzy returned to Lagos, Nigeria, in 2004. That year, they formed their joint-owned record label Mo’ Hits Records. They also released the evergreen single, “Tongolo”. The duo was not as financially buoyant as they will become years later, in fact, D’Banj’s mom paid for the video of Tongolo.
Number 5. Following Tongolo’s success, D’banj and Don Jazzy went on to produce “No Long Thing” in 2005. This was his debut album and it featured 12 songs. The next year, in 2006 D’banj released his second studio album titled “Rundown Funk U Up”. This album contained 17 tracks including the famous song “Why Me”.
Number 4. All things come to an end. In 2012, he and his longtime friend, Don Jazzy went their separate ways. There were many rumours about the split but D’banj cleared the air in an interview where he said it was simply because their visions became different.
Number 3. During his music career, Dbanj has won about 30 major awards from reputable award events. Kora Awards, MTV Europe and MTV Africa awards, The Headies, Channel O, BET, Sound City awards, MOBO awards and so on have all recognised D’banj’s artistry. He became big not just locally but internationally, even if the fame did not last long after he and Don Jazzy split up.
Number 2. In June 2016, D’banj and Lineo Didi Kilgrow got married and welcomed their first son, Daniel Oyebanjo III, in May 2017. Sadly, D’banj’s child died in a drowning accident in June 2018. In 2019, the couple welcomed another son.
Number 1. In June 2020, D’banj became involved in a rape controversy after a Twitter user Seyitan Babatayo accused him of raping her in 2018. She said that she formally made a criminal complaint against D’banj at the Gender Desk of the Nigeria Police Force Lagos Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja Lagos. She also mentioned trying unsuccessfully in the past to give a detailed account of her experience at Bar Beach Police Station, Victoria Island, on June 6, 2020. “That attempt was thwarted by an officer of the law at the said police barracks," Seyitan wrote on Twitter.
D’banj remains one of the most respected musicians in Nigeria and one of its best entertainers ever.
