Salvatore speaks Griko - Castrignano dei Greci

I spent a whole day recently with a Griko family in Castrignano de' Greci where I was blessed to speak Griko with the grandfather mastora Salvatore. First of all I need to thank the whole family for their hospitality. They where extremely friendly with me and they made me feel like I was at home. My experience with the Griko language was like a shock to me. Although sometimes it was hard for me to understand and follow mastora Salvatore, most of the time we were having a good conversation. After a while I was able to identify some key elements of the syntax and grammar and start using them to reply back to him in "Griko" or whatever was that that I spoke. I could see it in his eyes how surprised he was when he was able to understand me after a while. What struck me most was the fact that they still use archaic and medieval Greek elements in their language like converting the λλ to dd e.g. poddi for πολλοί or using words like βραχώνας (braxona) to describe the arm. In this video mastora Salvatore enumerates a few body and face elements in Griko. I have more videos which I will post in the coming days.
