Hong Kong's Financial Secretary and Securities & Futures Commission (SFC) planned to make a big announcement at Hong Kong Fintech Week 2022. They did not disappoint when they announced the focus of Hong Kong as an international virtual asset centre, and opened the door to exploring retail investor access to virtual assets.

LITE Lab at HKU''s founding executive director Brian Tang planned a roundtable of Hong Kong legal experts and practitioners to convene two days after the annoucnement. Alas, the Typhoon 8 (T8) flag was hoisted that morning, so the roundtable quickly pivoted to being held virtually rather than in-person.

This roundtable took place on November 2 - one week before the FTX implosion.

Many of the roundtable observations and comments remain as pertinent as ever as Hong Kong and the world charts the path ahead for the regulation of the ever-evolving ecosystem of virtual assets / digital assets.
