STORYLINE:

Cuba launched its annual campaign on Wednesday leading up to next month's United Nations vote against US trade sanctions.

The United States has defied UN General Assembly resolutions on the subject for the past ten years.

Last year only the United States, Israel and the Marshall Islands voted in favour of keeping the sanctions.

Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque gathered diplomats on Monday to the Foreign Ministry and then journalists on Wednesday to spell out Cuba's resolution calling for an end to the embargo.

The United Nations General Assembly is scheduled to vote on the US trade embargo on November 12.

In Cuba's report to the UN Secretary, which was submitted 15 July, Cuba declares that the sanctions have caused more than 70 (b) billion US dollars in damages to the Caribbean island over the past four decades.

Perez Roque also welcomed to power Brazil's new president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva - calling it a positive result for latin America's largest country.

Silva, 57, a farmer's son who rose to lead a labour union, won the Brazilian presidency on Sunday with 61 per cent of the vote and is to take office on 1 January.

Castro was among several heads of state to send Silva congratulatory messages.
