The “Himno a León” is the official anthem of the city of León (Spain). It was composed by the musician Odón Alonso González, with lyrics by José Pinto Maestro, director of the Orfeón Leonés. It was premiered in 1934 on the occasion of the 5th Centenary of the feat of the Paso Honroso de Suero de Quiñones in Hospital de Órbigo, and in 1978 it was adopted as the official anthem of the city.

The first bars of the anthem to León could be inspired by the composition “Le chanson de l'oignon”, a famous military march of the French Revolution. In addition, it should be noted that this Anthem is official only at the level of the Municipality of León and not at the provincial level, as might be believed.
It was one of the first “national” anthems with lyrics, and this was thanks to José Pinto Maestro (1893-1952), from León, who in addition to being a lawyer was intensely dedicated to journalism, being director of the newspapers “La Mañana” and “El Porvenir de León” and editor in “León de España” and “La Crónica de León” among others.
The music was composed by Odón Alonso González (1900-1977), a man dedicated body and soul to music and to whom we have to thank for the foundation of the Municipal Band of León in 1941 and the Chamber Orchestra of León in November 1962 (later this became the Symphony Orchestra of León “Odón Alonso”, as well as many other initiatives, almost always related to the city of León, which made the City Council of León name him an adopted son of the city, since he was a native of La Bañeza. He was also the father of the director Odón Alonso Ordás.
Neither of the two lived to see how the Anthem to León became the official anthem of the city shortly after the death of the musician from La Bañeza. More than 44 years had to pass since its premiere —and the dedication that both made of it to both the City Council and the Provincial Council— for the City Council of the capital to approve it. adopted as their own.
The plenary session held on March 16, 1978, with Óscar Rodríguez Cardet as mayor, institutionally recognized the merit of a composition that had been adopted and popularized a long time ago, to which the Official Bulletin of the Province (BOP) gave on Monday, April 10 the formal recognition - at the municipal level - that the people of León had granted it almost half a century ago.
The official anthem of León was unveiled on October 1, 1978, in the Plaza del Grano, after the arrival of the decorated floats that celebrated San Froilán. The Orfeón Leonés, directed by Luis Samartino, accompanied by the music band, performed it. It was also recorded by the orchestra and choirs of RTVE directed by the illustrious Odón Alonso Ordás, son of the author of the music, to promote its dissemination.
