If you’re wondering what makes Chinese New Year in Sabah unique, here’s your answer—the Qilin (Chinese Unicorn) dance! This dance is a cultural heritage of the Hakka community, many of whom live in Sabah. Surprisingly, it's rarely seen in West Malaysia.

Despite its fierce appearance, which might startle some children, the Qilin is a gentle and noble creature in Chinese legend. It’s curious, cautious, and highly intelligent—and fun fact, it’s also a vegan! There’s an old saying, "When the Qilin turns its head, all illnesses disappear" (麒麟回首百病消), as it is believed to bring health and prosperity.

This performance captures the timid yet playful nature of the Qilin. Every step is careful and deliberate as it constantly observes its surroundings, showing its thoughtful and cautious nature. In this video, the Qilin is awakened by a distressed bird’s call. It follows the sound, discovers a trapped bird, and rescues it. After enjoying a treat as a reward, it grooms itself and heads home. Its curious and affectionate behaviour reminds me of a golden retriever!
