Durga Puja is the main festival of Bengalis. In the media-influenced society of recent times, people's craze for Kolkata's urban and thematic Durga Puja is no less. Durga Puja is being celebrated today as a festival only. Is this a festival like any other? Does it have a cultural and religious significance? This talk discusses the evolution, history and its Religio-cultural significance and importance of the current Bengali festival Durga Puja.

About The Speaker:
Dr. Probal Roy Chowdhury is currently Director, Centre for New India Studies, and Professor, Department of English, at Sister Nivedita University, Kolkata. He has done Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in English Language and Literature from University of Madras. Later a PhD in History of Indian Education. His teaching and research interests centre around the history of education in modern India, society and polity in pre-British India, cultural and religious traditions of Bengal, postcolonial theory and literature, and Indian writing in English. In Kolkata, Professor Roy Chowdhury is part of a small team involved in developing an India studies resource centre with a special focus on documenting the past and the present socioreligious and cultural traditions of Bengal.
