Tornadoes are classified based on their wind speed and the damage that they cause. The scale that meteorologists use to assign a rating to a tornado is the Enhanced Fujita scale or EF-scale.

In 1971, Dr. Theodore Fujita developed the Fujita scale to estimate tornado wind speeds based on damage left behind by a tornado. In 2007, the EF scale was created to make improvements to the original tornado scale.

The EF-scale considers more factors than the F-scale did when assigning a wind speed rating to a tornado. These factors include Damage Indicators (DIs) and Degrees of Damage (DoD) to achieve a better range of wind speeds that a tornado likely produced.

There are 6 ratings for tornadoes on the EF-Scale, from EF0 to EF5.

Each rating is based on 3-second wind gusts ranging from:
EF0 65-85 mph
EF1 86-110 mph
EF2 111-135 mph
EF3 136-165 mph
EF4 166-200 mph
EF5 And gusts over 200 mph

EF5 tornadoes are left open ended because there is uncertainty regarding the strongest wind speeds during these destructive tornadoes.

This is the type of damage associated with each type of tornado. (Light, Moderate, Considerable, Severe, Devastating, Incredible appear)
