The difference between these two Altitudes is huge.

The Real Altitude of an Airplane is the difference expressed in feet between the Aircraft and the Mean Sea Level.

The Cabin Altitude is the Altitude, inside the Cabin that you feel when you fly.

In an unpressurized Aircraft, these two altitudes are the same however, when the Aircraft has the performance to climb high, let’s say above 10000 feet the Cabin should be pressurized.

Why? Because at high altitudes the air is less dense and we cannot survive for a long time at very high altitudes, such as 20, or 30 thousand feet.

An Airline Jet, such as the Airbus A320, can easily fly above 30000 feet, thus for its occupants, in order to survive, it is required a pressurized cabin where the air is dense enough.

So, the Cabin Altitude is the Altitude expressed in feet that the people on board are feeling, usually, it is between 5000 and 7000 feet at around 30000 feet or above.

The Pilots need to monitor the cabin altitude because if there is a problem with the pressurization system an Emergency descent is required immediately.

The target is to always maintain the Cabin Altitude below 10000 feet.
