Build a Knight Rider LED scanner using only a 555 timer, a 4017 decade counter, and ten diodes. No microcontroller required.

In this video I build a five LED Knight Rider style scanner using pure hardware. A 555 timer generates a clock signal and the CD4017 decade counter steps through ten outputs. By steering each pair of outputs through diodes into five LEDs, we get a clean forward and backward sweep that looks like the classic Knight Rider or Cylon scanner.

This project uses only simple components. Everything is demonstrated step by step on a breadboard including the 555 astable clock, the 4017 wiring, the diode steering network, and the LED array.

Parts used:
• 1× NE555 timer
• 1× CD4017 decade counter
• 2× 10 kΩ resistors
• 1× 10 µF electrolytic capacitor
• 1× 10 nF capacitor
• 5× LEDs
• 5× 470 Ω resistors
• 10× 1N4148 diodes (Or equivalent)
• Breadboard and jumper wires
• 5 V power source (Uno)
