Why Heavy Leg Training Might be Hurting Your Progress

In this video, I explain why it’s sometimes okay to skip leg day. Or, at least, why it’s okay to train legs less than you are right now.

Many of us train our legs out of a sense of moral obligation. We don’t want to be imbalanced or as having “fake” strength. You might have heard that training legs is the most important part of your workout, even!

But this isn’t really true. You certainly don’t need to go heavy on legs, if you don’t want to.

What I’d argue is absolutely essential, is to be able to get into a deep squat and lunge deeply forward and side-to-side. Basic mobility in this sense will ensure you can move athletically and free from pain. So, no, we shouldn’t skip leg day *entirely*.

Beyond this? It’s optional.

If your only interest is in aesthetics and you’re not fussed about your legs, being slavish about dedicating half your workouts to leg day… it’s just going to make you enjoy working out LESS. For someone like that, there’s no reason not to spend 90% of the time on upper body hypertrophy with just a little time dedicated to squats or something similar.

If you’re interested in athletic performance… you should be practicing running and jumping. And there are plenty of ways to become more athletic that don’t involve getting under huge amounts of weight. You can train ankle stiffness, for example. You can train explosiveness with plyometrics…

Interested in pure strength? Then surely you’re also spending some time on grip training and rotational strength, right? Surely, you’re practicing some awkward lifts?

And for real, useful strength, strength endurance is just as important as max strength.

None of this is to say you should skip leg day. None of this is to say that training with heavy squats and deadlifts isn’t useful or powerful.

Only that NO training is mandatory. And we shouldn’t pressure people into training a certain way online, just because that’s what we’ve been told!
