Today I want to discuss an uncommon but commonly undiagnosed condition. This is called interstitial cystitis or painful bladder syndrome. This is more commonly seen in women and what are the common symptoms patient comes with pain in the lower abdomen frequent urination urgency to pass urine and this could be associated with pain in the pelvis pain in the lower back and very non-specific symptoms which are difficult to put it in one basket. Now this sounds like urinary tract infection and it is correct. So how do you differentiate Interstitial cystitis or painful bladder syndrome from urinary tract infection It Is by doing a urine test in urinary tract infection we see telltale evidence of urinary tract infection whereas in Interstitial cystitis. We do not see urinary tract infection. However as I said the symptoms are so similar that they are confused with each other. What are the other tests to diagnose Interstitial cystitis? One is by ultrasound which sometimes gives a clue but not always. But many times we end up doing cystoscopy to visualize the interior of the bladder in which certain changes are seen in interstitial cystitis. Now coming to the treatment for interstitial cystitis it is most of the time medical management and some lifestyle changes. These help in relieving the symptoms of interstitial cystitis. Rarely we do something called hydro distension which is a stretching of the bladder which gives relief in many people. So interstitial cystitis is not a common cause for symptoms of urinary tract. But it has to be diagnosed because many times it is mistaken for urinary tract infection.
