What’s the difference between a relationship manager and a credit manager? The biggest difference is in mindset and primary function:

Relationship Manager (RM): Focuses on bringing in new clients and building business relationships. Like a host, they invite guests to the bank, identify opportunities, and help clients with banking solutions.

Credit Manager: Acts as a “gatekeeper,” evaluating incoming proposals and clients to ensure risk standards are met. They deeply analyze the borrower’s financial health and decide “who gets in” for credit.
Think of it this way: The RM brings the horse to the race, and the credit manager checks — will this horse run and finish safely? Both roles ultimately aim for the bank’s growth, but through different expertise: the RM builds relationships and books business, the credit manager safeguards asset quality and decides on lending.
