Mr Ravi Ravitharan, Mr Peter Mutton and Mr Graham Tew from the Institute of Railway Technology (IRT) have been awarded the prestigious Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) Clunies Ross Award for the application of science and technology for the benefit of Australia. Their research is offering major benefits to operators of heavy-haul and metro railway systems.
The award was presented at a gala dinner on 21 May 2014 at the Perth Convention Centre attended by more than 300 eminent entrepreneurs, decision makers, government officials, researchers, academics and business leaders. The awards dinner was opened by Hon Colin Barnett MLA, Premier of Western Australia, followed by a keynote address from Professor Ian Chubb AC, Chief Scientist of Australia. Monash University Chancellor Dr Alan Finkel was also present at the awards function.
The ATSE Clunies Ross Award is given in recognition of the outstanding application of science and technology that provides economic, social and/or environmental benefit to Australia. The Award is one of the pre-eminent awards for scientists, technologists and innovators across Australia.
The Award also raises the profile of science and technology in the community through promotion of the Awardees and their contributions to Australia. Award sponsors come from industry, government and academia and their support and participation maintains the high standard of this prestigious Award.
