Описание к видео Hard Drive Sounds: Western Digital Caviar Green WD20EARS-00J99B0

This model, being a latter Caviar Green prior to the discontinuation of the "Caviar" branding, is also one of the more uncommon ones from the looks of it. Most WD20EARS drives I personally see also use three platters but instead use the conventional HDA (which many people will know what that looks like if you've seen it; WD's been using it since 2007) rather than this uniquely cast one. Even earlier WD20EARS models used the 4-platter HDA also used by the WD20EADS, although that will be saved for a future video.

The Caviar Greens in general remain one of WD's most unreliable drives. Why, you may ask? Well, these drives sport a feature known as IntelliPark, and IntelliPark parks the head assembly on the ramp while the drive is idle, which helps to use less power...according to WD at least. The problem is, WD were using a very aggressive timer on the Caviar Greens (let's say 20 to 30 seconds of timeout before the heads are parked) which accumulated many load/unload cycles, which eventually led to drive failure. As such, compared to the more reliable Blacks and Blues, the Greens stuck out from the pack like a sore thumb. The WD Red series, which came after the Caviar branding was dropped, inherited the same Green technologies and as such also had an aggressive timer and a program to disable that timer named WDIDLE3. With the timer disabled, both the Greens and Reds ran more reliably, but if nothing was done they'd fail sooner; I'm personally surprised this didn't anger more people.
